RC Fire Department Opens New Station

Rapid City's bravest welcomed a new addition to the family with the opening of a new fire station.

On Thursday morning officials cut the 'hose' on their new Station 7.  It's on Mall Drive and Tish Road near Rushmore Crossings.

Rapid City Fire Chief Mike Maltaverne says because the north east portion of the city is growing the department needed a larger and centrally located station.

Maltaverne says, "This is a big step for us.  We've probably over doubled the size of our apparatus floor, the garage that we park the vehicles in.  It's really benefiting us in a way we can house more equipment at this station and it puts us in an area where we are better prepared for future growth north and east of the city, so it is a big step for us."

The new station replaced the former Station 7 located on the corner of Anamosa and North Maple Avenue which the city has been using since the mid 1960s.

The old building will be leased to the Red Cross by the city.
