Thune Opposes Kagans Nomination

Senator John Thune says he will oppose Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan.

The South Dakota republican says Kagan's background in academia is impressive, but he questions whether she can serve as an impartial justice.

Thune says he thinks Kagan lacks judicial and courtroom experience and has a partisan political background.

Even though confirmation hearings are to begin late this month Thune says he made his decision to not support Kagan confirmation after meeting with her.

South Dakota Republican Sen. John Thune "My assessment is this is not someone that fits the definition of what I can support in terms a nominee in the highest court of the land.  I will be voting 'no' when it comes in front of the United States Senate."

South Dakota’s Democrat Senator Tim Johnson says he plans to meet with Kagan Thursday.

While he has not said whether he will confirm the nomination, he did say he has not seen anything to disqualify the Supreme Court nominee.

President Barack Obama earlier nominated Kagan, the U.S. Solicitor General, to succeed retiring Justice John Paul Stevens.
