A driver has died following a series of crashes near Davis, South Dakota, and two Rapid City women were hurt in that same accident.

It was caused by blinding smoke from a controlled burn yesterday.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol identified the person who died as 69-year-old James Brandsrud of Davis.

In the first of two crashes a 2004 Honda Civic was traveling east on US-18, two miles west of Davis.

The Honda driven by Janet Courtney of Yankton approached an area with heavy smoke on the roadway.

The Honda Civic left its proper lane of travel and struck a 2004 Ford Focus driven by Donna Brenneise, of Rapid City.

The Ford was traveling westbound and the impact took place in the westbound lane.           Teresa Courtney, of Rapid City was an injured passenger in the Honda Civic.

In crash number two, three vehicles in the eastbound lane stopped.

Brandstrud, the person who died, was one of the drivers who got out of his car, and then was hit by a fourth driver, who authorities say didn't see the eastbound vehicles stopped.
