National Library Week

Many organizations have been victims of a poor economy during the past several years.

But for one local organization, traffic has actually picked up.  And its representatives say part of the reason for their recent success is the poor economy.

That organization is the Rapid City Public Library.  And this week is National Library Week, which not only means the library has an excess of programs and activities this week, but it's a great time to look at the other resources our local library has to offer.

The Rapid City Public Library recently received a grant for more than $11,000 for the community archives.

Youth Services Librarian Stephanie Bents says, "We have a rich historical, a rich historical background.  With the railroads, the mining, Deadwood, and tourism, the list goes on and on, and we are trying to preserve that and make it available so people can know where we come from and where we are going."

The Rapid City Public Library gained 21 percent more borrowers in the past year.  Representatives contribute the increase not only to the poor economy, but also to their efforts to offer services that appeal to all demographics.
