Traveling the Country to Lend a Hand

Their last stop was in New Orleans to help rebuild the city, and now they're hoping to make a difference in Rapid City.

The group is the National Civilian Community Corps, and is composed of six members.  Each is spending seven weeks lending a hand at the Black Hills Workshop.

All of the members have their own specialty; some are spending time in the Arts Department, while others are working on keeping everyone moving in the Rec Center.

Meredith Kamis of the NCCC says, "We've been organizing Wii Bowling Tournaments, and we've been playing basketball and getting people up on the treadmill so they can do their program that he calls 10,000 steps a day.  So he has people signed up and we go get them and bring them down here to work out with us."

Members are already forming strong relationships with clients at the Workshop.  Both sides say they are thankful for the opportunity.

Joe Burmeister, Director of The Sport & Fitness Center says, "I can envision this being a scenario where people who we support here that are making friendships with the volunteers will keep in touch with each other after they leave...these will be life long friendships that I think will carry on."

The group also works on a side project at each stop, and during this trip, members are considering a project with park services.
