Driving on closed roads during a blizzard not only puts you in danger, it threatens the lives of rescue workers who are called out to help.
A bill approved by the legislature gives the state authority to seek a civil penalty of up to $1,000 when people are stranded on highways that have been officially closed because of blizzards or for other reasons.
The state also could go to court to recover the costs of any rescue attempt or vehicle removal, up to $10,000.
The bill sets out ways the state must inform the public that a highway is closed. The bill now goes to the governor.
