Census Road Tour at the Civic Center

Satuday, the 2010 Census Road Tour made a stop at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City.

Representatives were on hand to answer questions, offer information on census jobs and hand out free promotional items.

In 2000, only 67 percent of the census forms were returned to the Census Bureau.

This year, officials are hoping for a higher turnout.

The road tour aims to educate people about the importance of being counted and how the census affects their communities.

“There's over $400 billion per year in federal funds that are divided up based on the census data. Here in South Dakota, it’s about $400 per person per year that comes to our community in state and federal dollars.  That adds up to a lot of money for our community.  So we need to make sure that we are getting a complete and accurate count," says Max Wetz, partnership specialist.

Residents are being asked to complete their census form and return it by April 1, 2010 which is "Census Day."
