A year ago, Pine Ridge defeated Dell Rapids by six points to win the State A Girls Basketball Tournament. It was the first title for the Lady Thorpes since 1989.
Thursday afternoon, Pine Ridge begin its quest for another state championship.
The Lady Thorpes moved on after defeating Stickney/Mt. Vernon 53-43.
In the first game of the day at the State A Tournament, number one seed Sisseton held off number eight Dakota Valley by a final of 45-26, so Sisseton will play Pine Ridge in the semi-finals.
In the state B tournament, number eight ranked Highmore/Harrold upset number one Newell 67 to 55.
Also Wall outscored Summit 18-12 in the fourth quarter to send it into overtime.
But then the Eagles lost to Summit 64-63.
There were two more upsets at the Girls State AA Tournament. It was Sioux Falls O'Gorman over number one Aberdeen Central 44-41 in overtime, and in the other quarter final game; Sioux Falls Washington pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Sioux Falls Lincoln 52-45.
