$20 Million Airport Upgrade Coming

The Rapid City Regional Airport is growing faster than the national average, it sees about 500,000 people each year and the terminal is about to get an upgrade to the tune of about $18-20 million.

The terminal project will expand the security checkpoint up for two or three lanes, add additional jet bridges, another gate, additional storage, an upgraded restaurant and gift shop in the concourse.

The original building is about 20 years old.

Airport executives hope the remodel will last at least that long into the future.

Cameron Humphries, from Rapid City Regional Airport, said, “It has to be to accommodate both the passengers we have now in the future.  My goal with this expansion project is to push this terminal out another 20 years.  The money has to be put toward the operational requirements."

The airport board moved to continue work on the design of the construction project.

Funding for the remodel comes from passenger fees and federal grants.

The project is expected to be done in the summer of 2012.
