Black Hills Power wants to boost its electric rates by 20 percent until state regulators decide the company's earlier request for an even larger rate hike.
The company filed a 26.6 percent rate increase request with the Public Utilities Commission last September to cover costs of the startup of a generating plant in Wyoming.
The request is pending before the commission and would add about $18 a month to the typical household bill. Until that case is settled, the company says it needs the 20 percent increase starting April 1.
The rate change affects about 64,100 customers in western South Dakota.
