A plan to build a new minimum security prison at a Rapid City site owned by the state has been endorsed by a panel of South Dakota lawmakers.
The House Appropriations Committee voted 7-2 to approve
A measure that would provide $3.8 million to renovate a building on this site the State Corrections Department bought last summer.
Furniture manufacturer, Don Perdue, is challenging the state plan in a lawsuit now being considered by the South Dakota Supreme Court.
Perdue wants the state to build the prison at another nearby site.
But State Corrections Secretary Tim Reisch says the state needs to go ahead and build the prison on the site the state already owns.
