If you heard some dogs howling, it might be because Tuesday is a Spay Day USA.
It's the day each year Humane Society urges people to get their pets spayed or neutered.
Doctors say the surgery is important to control the pet population but it's also important for the health of dogs and cats. A sterilized pet is less likely to get breast cancer, prostate cancer, or testicular cancer. And the earlier the surgery, the safer it is for you pet and the cheaper it is for you.
Dr. Lynn Mazzone, with Mountain View Veterinary Clinic, says, "You want to do it in a controlled situation when you have a healthy young animal going in. You're doing it preventatively to prevent all these diseases and cancer, behavioral problems, pregnancy. You don't want to wait until you don't know whether or not they're pregnant."
