GF&P Outdoor Campus Groundbreaking Ceremony

It's a $12 million project that's been in the works for about a decade, and now it's one step closer to becoming a reality.  The new Rapid City Outdoor Campus-West building for Game Fish and Parks will be built in a little over a year.

Those with the agency along with many others took part in the groundbreaking ceremony on Friday.

Once built on Sturgis Road, in Rapid City, the campus and building will be an outdoor learning center.  Organizers say most if not all of the project is already paid for.

GF&P Commissioner Jeff Olson says, "It’s license dollars.  It's sportsman dollars.  People who buy hunting and fishing licenses are funding this project.  We've banked the money.  In our budget process, every year for the last four years we've put money aside to the point now we have $12.5 million set aside that is saved.  We're not bonding.  We're not borrowing.  We have the money."

Olson says the programming they'll offer for both kids and adults will be exciting.  He says getting kids involved will create future sportsmen, hunters, and other exciting opportunities.

The new building should be finished next spring.
