Meade County voters hit the polls in full force Tuesday to decide if an area east of Sturgis should be annexed to the city.
After all the votes were counted late Tuesday night, Sturgis voters defeated a proposal to annex over 18 hundred acres by a final count of 920 to 818.
City officials say that during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, businesses and campgrounds in the 18 hundred acre area benefit from city services without having to pay city taxes. However, Full Throttle Saloon owner Mike Ballard claims the city just wants to take money away from him when he does nothing but bring business to the city.
Ballard says his payroll during the rally is 320 thousand dollars, and 80 percent of it gets spent locally.
