The Black Hills has remained some what insulated from the national economic recession.
And while the national unemployment rate is still around 10 percent, that number is about half in South Dakota. And one local company is working to lower it even more.
ASI in Rapid City is hiring 160 career level employees. The call center is expanding its services and with the expansion comes the need for more people.
Of the new jobs, 30 will be management level and all the new jobs come with full benefits and health insurance. That will be a big boost to our local economy.
ASI Center Manager Carol Bancroft says, "These are not minimum wage positions. These are very nice positions where people can have careers and it is a real boost to the community."
Expanding businesses like ASI can benefit from recent tax credits. The Small Business Jobs and Wages Tax Cut is providing incentives for companies to expand and hire more people. And experts say the more job creation there is, the better chance we have of getting out of the economic recession.
Jim Shaw, with the Small Business Administration, says, "Most jobs in South Dakota, as well as across the nation, are created by small businesses. In fact, in South Dakota there are about 80,000 businesses and half of them have only one employee. So they are really small businesses. So if they employ another person or two or three more people that could be significant."
