Senator Gordon Howie of Rapid City, the latest South Dakota Republican to declare his candidacy for governor, says he believes the state budget must be cut by far more than others have recommended.
Howie said Tuesday that the budget plans outlined by Gov. Mike Rounds and by the Republican and Democratic leadership in the legislature all would lead to increased government spending and higher taxes.
Howie says spending next year should be held at this year’s level, which would mean cutting the governor's recommended budget by about $50 million.
The Republican Legislative Leadership has called for cutting the governor's budget by about $35 million.
Democrats want to limit growth in state government and cut some programs.
