A South Dakota National Guard united based out Rapid City has been notified it might be put on alert and mobilized to Iraq in the future. That unit has about a dozen members.
Meantime, the guard says it already has troops in Afghanistan and is prepared to send more overseas.
Each summer hundreds of guardsmen and women come to the Black Hills for training activities.
General Steven Doohen with the National Guard says although South Dakota troops have not been called up for additional deployments to Afghanistan, soldiers are always ready.
SD National Guard Adjutant General General Steven Doohen says, "We have been in this business here for the last number of years, the military and the South Dakota National Guard have been very busy. We're always trained and ready to go whenever the call comes. The people in South Dakota can take a lot of pride in their South Dakota National Guard."
Right now the 211th is stationed in Afghanistan and in about a week the South Dakota Air National Guard is sending and additional 350 personnel overseas.
