The start of various deer hunting seasons brings a reminder from the state Game, Fish, and Parks Department: that hunters can't use salt licks or bait to attract deer.
The department says some retailers sell various big-game baits and lures that are illegal to use in South Dakota.
Law enforcement program administrator Andy Alban said retailers are free to sell the products but hunters are responsible to know what's legal.
Alban said baiting can alter the natural movement of big-game animals for other hunters and increases the risk of spreading disease among animals that congregate in a spot.
