BH Restaurant Uses Hot Dogs to Help with Recession

The national unemployment rate is more than 10 percent, and even though it's about half that in the Black Hills, people are struggling.

One local restaurant is helping out by letting you pick your price for your meal.

On Thursdays at the Sturgis Dog House one hotdog is available for a hot price.  They say it's a steak wrapped up like a hot dog.

The deal is “Recession Buster Thursday” order what you want and pay what you can.

"Hopefully those that have will give a little extra to help those who don't have be able to come out and afford a meal which they can't normally do," says Ed Badger, owner of the Sturgis Dog House.

Ed Badger is hoping when customers come in and taste one of the 18 different varieties of hot dogs they'll be inclined to pay a little extra.  Because it's not just about paying what you can, it's about paying it forward.

“It gives people an opportunity to maybe give a little more than they usually would so other people can eat for less," says Kip Harbert of Spearfish.

And Maria Harbert says, “Just thought it was a great idea and I hope it inspires other businesses."

The idea might sound a little crazy, but so far it's working.

"We need to do what we can to help people; they're helping us by coming in the door, so let’s help them a little bit," says Badger.

And during these hard economic times, Ed thinks everyone deserves a high quality steak, even if it is wrapped like a hotdog and served with cheese.

The Sturgis Dog House is hoping to keep up its recession buster every Thursday through the holiday season.

It's just across from Pamida on Lazelle Street in Sturgis.
