Dennis Daugaard Kicks Off Gubernatorial Campaign

Lieutenant Governor Dennis Daugaard officially announced his candidacy for governor during a statewide tour Monday.

Daugaard has served as South Dakota's lieutenant governor since 2002.  Before that, he served in the state Senate from 1996.

His official announcement at the Black Hills Visitor Center was one of seven across the state.

During his speech in front of supporters, Daugaard says he is job-ready to be governor.

He says the next governor will have a tough job because the state will face a budget shortfall.  Daugaard says by the time the next governor takes office, the stimulus money South Dakota took from the federal government will run out.

"I'm no stranger to handling a tough budget.  Whether it's the state budget, the Children's Home Society budget, or the budget at home, and I know you all have to make those decisions in your own lives and in your own businesses, and you're own homes," says Daugaard.

Senate Majority Leader Dave Knudson, former Brookings mayor Scott Munsterman and Buffalo Gap rancher Ken Knuppe are also seeking the Republican nomination for governor.
