One Hospitalized From Officer Involved Shooting
Police are investigating a shooting that happened late this afternoon near New Underwood that involved two sheriffs deputies and a state trooper.
Around 5:00 Monday night, a portion of Highway 1416 was blocked off as several law enforcement agencies were dispatched to reports of a shooting East of New Underwood.
It all started around 4:30 Monday afternoon when two Pennington County Sheriff's Deputies and one South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper were pursuing a suspected drunk driver heading west.
When the driver refused to pull over spike strips were used and a felony traffic stop was conducted.
During the stop authorities say the driver produced a weapon, leading to shots being fired from law enforcement.
"Two of our deputies and a trooper were involved in a shooting with the suspect in the vehicle who was armed at the time. Other than that we've handed the investigation off to the Division of Criminal Investigation and they'll be assisted by the Rapid City Police Department," says Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom.
The suspect was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital and no word yet on his condition.
No one else was injured in the incident and it is still under investigation.
