Health Hazards During Winter Storms
Heavy snow and cold temperatures can be dangerous and health officials warn people to take the necessary precautions before heading outside and possibly putting your health at risk.
Not only can frostbite, icy sidewalks, and even operating a snow blower be hazards to your health, shoveling snow can be dangerous and sometimes deadly.
“When we get big heavy snows, especially if they're wet, there's a lot of risk for people especially if they have predisposing factors of coronary disease. So we want to have them avoid trying to shovel it all at once or trying to get out there right away and push this out because we see a lot of people coming in with heart attacks from snow shoveling,” says Dr, Don Neilson, an Emergency Room Physician with Rapid City Regional Hospital.
