The Rapid City Police Department is currently going through their reaccreditation process, where a team has been inspecting the everything from the Police Department’s buildings and equipment to their policies.

This process tests the RCPD’s policies and practices to make sure they are in the best interest of our community.

"Somebody has to check the people in authority somebody has to make sure we're doing what we say we're doing and doing it respectfully. It’s important to me as a chief to have a relationship with the community and the best way to do that is demonstrate with the community there’s value in the organization,” says Rapid City Police Chief Steve Allender.

The RCPD has been accredited since 1990, and the process occurs every three years.

This is a completely voluntary process and the RCPD became the first agency and is the only agency in South Dakota to be accredited.
