The state's congressional delegation has called on the U.S. Agriculture Department to act quickly to write rules for a livestock indemnity program available through the 2008 Farm Bill.
Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin and Sens. John Thune and Tim Johnson said in a joint letter to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack that South Dakota farmers and ranchers sustained livestock losses of 15 to 20 percent this spring, primarily from blizzards.
The livestock indemnity program would compensate producers for part of their documented loss.
