Ellsworth officials say 43-year old Chief Master Sergeant Robert Hoyt died from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound.
Hoyt was superintendent of the 28th Security Forces Squadron.
Hoyt's body was found at 11:30 on Saturday.
The cause of the incident is under investigation and the air force cannot say at the time whether the shot that killed Hoyt was accidental or a suicide.
Hoyt joined the air force in August 1987 and had been stationed at Ellsworth since May 2011.
