A new bill in the state legislature is aiming to change the definition of who can carry concealed weapons in the state.
House bill 10-15 provides for exceptions from certain misdemeanor offenses relating to possession of handguns.
Proponents of the bill say citizens who don't have any conviction, able to legally carry a firearm, shouldn't have to have a permit to carry a firearm.
The bill is intended to protect people who use a concealed weapon to protect themselves from a reasonable threat without a concealed permit.
District 35Representative Don Kopp says, “That's really about all it says. It doesn't really interfere with any of the other laws like I said. We are not trying to do away with the permit system. We don't people coming into our state that shouldn't be coming in with concealed weapons. They can't do it, they can't do it next year if the bills passes."
Kopp says four other states have the law on the books and that three of those states have seen a drop in crime rates.
