YFS Hosts Annual Harvest Meals

Wednesday and Thursday Youth and Family Services is hosting its Harvest Meal.

Wednesday, kids took part in the feast with their parents and even some grandparents as well.

Turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, and a pumpkin bar is on the menu..

Staff and volunteers at YFS say they have heard 'thank you' from some very appreciative families.

Organizers say they think it's important to put on the annual meal.

Darcie Decker, Nutrition Director, says, “Well, it's part of the family traditions, and a tradition we've been practicing here at Youth and Family Services for over 30 years of having a turkey dinner with the parents the families."

Staff cooking the meal have to start early.

It began Monday morning at 4:30.

Organizers cooked over 300 pounds of turkey, about 35 pounds of green beans for Wednesday, and for Thursday’s meal, another 40 pounds of green beans are expected to be cooked.

Staff members say it feels good to give back.

Brandie Jones, Nutrition Supervisor, says, “It just warms me. I kind of had a tough growing up so this is a good place."

Thursday is the girls incorporated harvest meal will be served.

During the entire event, organizers plan on serving between 600 and 800 people.
